Anime Director Yamakan Declares that Anime is Dead!

Anime director Yutaka "Yamakan" Yamamoto (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, Wake Up, Girls!) caused a bit of a stir in July when he proclaimed at an event in Osaka that "anime is dead." He was influenced by Toshio "Otaking" Okada, a former Gainax staffer and cultural commentator, who earlier pronounced "otaku is dead" (sic). On September 27, Okada and Yamamoto sat down for a conversation at which the latter explained what he meant.

While Okada meant that generational differences among otaku (avid fans of popular culture) were fracturing the tribal mentality that distinguished the subculture, Yamamoto stressed that "the end of anime" was a more personal thing for him — "anime has steadily moved the opposite way from what I do." He feels that moe is "becoming Fascist" in the sense that its depiction is controlled by unwritten rules: "Don't show panties. Showing panties is in line with male desires, so let's show them." Yamamoto prefers to operate by his own rules, but gets criticism when he does so and claims he "can't handle the times."

Left: Okada, Right: Yamamoto

Okada followed up the conversation by asking Yamamoto if the kind of anime that made him want to enter the industry had disappeared. Yamamoto largely agreed, remembering that he felt as if an era had ended when Hayao Miyazaki retired. When he watched your name., he felt as if he "still had friends," and he still has hope, but he feels that the times have mostly changed. "I feel like I'm already all alone," he says, and laments the lack of "anime he knows" like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind or the original Neon Genesis Evangelion. Okada went on to mock the recent Evangelion movies for their zombie-like fixation with moe characters.

On the other hand, Yamamoto later praised a trend he discerned toward producing anime geared towards non-anime fans, using the metaphor of a crowd surging through the walls of a fortress. He says that many anime fans have girlfriends and other hobbies and defy the otaku stereotype. Movies like Godzilla Resurgence, your name., In This Corner of the World and Zootopia fit this category. Okada notes that these sorts of anime are not geared towards selling merchandise.

To read the entire lengthy interview in Japanese, see here. Yamamoto had earlier expressed his envy of your name. in a blog post. Yamamoto took indefinite leave earlier this year to recuperate after "far too unreasonable circumstances piling up" caused him to be in poor health.

4. Onani Master Kurosawa

A dark twisted slice-of-life manga with a slight romantic touch to it. You may find the synopsis a little sick, but believe me it turns out to be much more than that. Don't judge a book by its cover. This manga is one of my personal all-time favorites. Its the type of manga you would love to read at night, under your warm blanket and then after finishing the manga just give yourself away and let you sleep take over, with your satisfied soul accepting it with a bliss~

Synopsis: Onani means masturbation. And that's what this guy is good at. Every day after school, he sneaks into the mostly unused girls bathroom on the 3rd floor, and masturbates. Top 7 Things All Fujoshi's & Fudanshi's Know All Too Well

Heyo to all yaoi lovers reading this! We all go through the daily issues of being fujoshi's and fudanshis, so here are some things I'm sure we all know all too well!

1. People will ALWAYS try to look at your screen

We all know that horrible feeling of having someone watching us read over our shoulders, and the embarrassment felt when they see what it is. No matter how many times you try to hide your screen there will ALWAYS be someone to see it.

2. Knowing your Ships Will NEVER be Cannon

No matter how much we wish, and how much we ship, we know they will never become cannon! We ship and ship and ship. Making fanarts, writing fanfictions, and even drawing our own doujinshi. Though in the end, we all know our hopes and dreams will just be crushed.

3. Reading Smut Vs. Fluff

Ah, the mystery of how we all can keep a straight face while reading hardcore smut may never be known. Or how about how we all blush like crazy when reading fluff? I’ve always felt it should be the other way around, but that just isn’t how things work now is it? Though, I can’t say I dislike this. It does mean we can all read some smut during our classes at school!

4.Trying to Find a Good Manga You Once Read

Try as you may, and try as you might, sometimes trying just isn't enough when looking for an old manga! We all have that special manga we once read and just can't get out of our minds, but remembering it's name is a completely different story. Even after hours and hours of searching through the yaoi tag on the sites we read on, chances of finding it are low. Though, don't give up! Luck will be yours eventually.

5. Dealing with Outrageous Fandoms

We all know that one fandom that takes things too far. *cough* SnK *cough* You don't like their ship? They hate you! Now now girls, no need to fight over such trivial things. I'm sure we all have a ship or two of our own no one likes. So why fight?

In the end, we're all just fangirls and boys.

6. Not all Hot Guys Want Each Other

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but it is indeed true that not all hot guys are gay! Not every guy you see on the streets goes home to his lover for a steamy session of alone time. It's the hard truth, but in the end there is always yaoi manga/anime to rely on when you need to satisfy your needs. (Don't prey on poor innocent men with your fantasies guys!)

7. Staying up all Night to Finish a Manga

Ah, we all have had those long rewarding nights spent in front of the monitor. No matter how much sleep is lost, or how tired he may get, finishing our manga is the top priority! The amazing feeling of finally reading the happy ending at five in the morning, or even getting to the last chapter to find out there are more to come. It's all very worth it!
