Anime Director Yamakan Declares that Anime is Dead!

Anime director Yutaka "Yamakan" Yamamoto (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, Wake Up, Girls!) caused a bit of a stir in July when he proclaimed at an event in Osaka that "anime is dead." He was influenced by Toshio "Otaking" Okada, a former Gainax staffer and cultural commentator, who earlier pronounced "otaku is dead" (sic). On September 27, Okada and Yamamoto sat down for a conversation at which the latter explained what he meant.

While Okada meant that generational differences among otaku (avid fans of popular culture) were fracturing the tribal mentality that distinguished the subculture, Yamamoto stressed that "the end of anime" was a more personal thing for him — "anime has steadily moved the opposite way from what I do." He feels that moe is "becoming Fascist" in the sense that its depiction is controlled by unwritten rules: "Don't show panties. Showing panties is in line with male desires, so let's show them." Yamamoto prefers to operate by his own rules, but gets criticism when he does so and claims he "can't handle the times."

Left: Okada, Right: Yamamoto

Okada followed up the conversation by asking Yamamoto if the kind of anime that made him want to enter the industry had disappeared. Yamamoto largely agreed, remembering that he felt as if an era had ended when Hayao Miyazaki retired. When he watched your name., he felt as if he "still had friends," and he still has hope, but he feels that the times have mostly changed. "I feel like I'm already all alone," he says, and laments the lack of "anime he knows" like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind or the original Neon Genesis Evangelion. Okada went on to mock the recent Evangelion movies for their zombie-like fixation with moe characters.

On the other hand, Yamamoto later praised a trend he discerned toward producing anime geared towards non-anime fans, using the metaphor of a crowd surging through the walls of a fortress. He says that many anime fans have girlfriends and other hobbies and defy the otaku stereotype. Movies like Godzilla Resurgence, your name., In This Corner of the World and Zootopia fit this category. Okada notes that these sorts of anime are not geared towards selling merchandise.

To read the entire lengthy interview in Japanese, see here. Yamamoto had earlier expressed his envy of your name. in a blog post. Yamamoto took indefinite leave earlier this year to recuperate after "far too unreasonable circumstances piling up" caused him to be in poor health.

6 Anime Facts That'll Make You Re-Think Your Entire Anime Career - Part 1

You think you know your anime? Ugh, well, think again!

1. Do you wanna check our math on that?

2. Over 2000 people work on each anime episode!

3. Fangirls, you'll love this one!

4. The staff that worked on Boku No Pico were imported from the anime staff of Fullmetal Alchemist & Mirai Nikki.

5. Japan you never cease to amaze us!

6. Clefachu?

5 Times Japan Gave Us Very Questionable Anime

Japan is known for a lot of things, some weird, some marvelous. The same goes for the Japan's anime industry. Today, we present you our pick for the 5 really really questionable anime exported by Japan!

1. Kodomo no Jikan
Loli pandering shows will always be controversial, but none gets more heat than Kodomo no Jikan. The series touches on worthwhile themes like child abuse, body image, and the teacher-student dynamic. Sadly, these themes go out the window due to a 9-year-old girl trying to sleep with her 23-year-old teacher and copious amounts of loli fanservice.

2. Seikon no Qwaser
Ecchi has become more common, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It causes ecchi-focused shows to get creative.

Seikon no Qwaser definitely is creative, even if it falls flat on it's face. Any show with breast milk as it's central plot device should be a parody, but Qwaser is determined to be a sexual Berserk. It comes off as creepy and sexist, as the female cast is reduced to little more than milk jugs for our "hero" to suckle on.

3. Strawberry Panic!
Exploring one's sexuality is super common for high schoolers, but Strawberry Panic! seems to think that consent doesn't need to be involved. The series frequently displays sexual assault, unwanted kisses, attempted rape, and emotional manipulation as something that is fine as long as girls are doing it to each other.

4. Kuttsukiboshi
Kuttsukiboshi answers every question with rape.

About to go in for an operation? Rape your sister for good luck.

Did your best friend catch you getting raped by your brother? Just rape her!

Your rapist / friend about to leave Japan? Rape her on the train then teleport to an isolated planet with her!

Can you believe Kuttsukiboshi is not a hentai?

5. Oriemo
Oreimo tries so hard to be more than incestuous tripe. We want to sympathize with Kirino, who hides her otaku hobbies out of fear of rejection. We might identify with Ruri, especially if we went though a chuunibyo stage. Then there is Ayase, the girl who knows nothing about otaku culture.

Oreimo could have been a nice look at social expectations, but instead we got an abusive tsundere, a psycho stalker, and a manic presented as harem material. It became the very thing the story was supposedly speaking out against.

Azura's Top 5 Underrated Anime Series

There is a lot of anime out there. Some you may have missed when watching seasonal anime or some you never heard of. Here is 5 series you could check out that are underrated.

1.Bartender [Release: 2006, Genre:Slice of Life]
Bartender is about Sasakura Ryuu a genius bartender who is the Bartender of Eden Hall a bar located in Tokyo. He is able to create the perfect cock tails for any occasion. You see many walks of life come to Eden Hall. From politicians to actors. Everyone has a story to tell. We hear everyones story who comes into Eden hall. Some of them can be very touching. It shows what they have gone through. I would say Bartender is like sitting around a campfire telling story since that is what this is. It's relaxing and has a very Mushishi style feel to it.

2. Nobunaga Concerto [Release: 2014, Genre: Romance]
Nobunage Concerto is about Sabarou a lazy high school student who gets sent to The Wanning States period of Japan and becomes a double for Nobunaga Oda. It shows him having to adapt to this new culture which he is not accustomed to and getting power to rule a country with some romance mixed in. One downside to this series is that it has some pretty bad CGI at times.

3. Moribito: The Guardian Spirit [Release: 2007, Genre: Fantasy]
So what's is Moribito about? A water spirit possessed a prince by the name of Chagum and while he was almost killed him. A spear women by the name of Balsa rescued him. The Queen asked her to protect him and gave her quite a bit of money. Thus there adventure began. They're trying to figure out how to get the water spirit out of Chagum while be chased by assassins, and exploring the world. It has really good world building and the animation is absolutely stunning. I never seen fights this well choreographed in a tv series before well besides the Ufotable adaptions of Fate.

4.Kuuchuu Buranko [Release: 2010, Genre: Psychological]
Kuuchuu Buranko is an episodic series that takes place in what I believe is Tokyo. It follows patients which all have some different issue and they see this psychiatrist by the name of Ichiro Irabu. Irabu always gives them a vitamin shot and has some unique treatment for each of their issues. Some of the patients range from romance authors to trapeze performers to baseball players. All of the patients come in a specific time of the year which is between December 17th to December 25th. And You do see them in other episodes as well. The story does not take place just in the Hospital that Irabu works at either. Us the viewer follow each patient as they get to deal with curing whatever issue they have. As well as getting more insight on the issue they have from an actual doctor who pops in each episode to give us more information. This anime won't be for everyone. It uses a LOT of rotoscope. It has a very unique art style to that isn't like most anime of today and it can put a lot of people off.

5. The Tatami Galaxy [Release: 2010, Genre: Romance]
Tatami Galaxy is something that is a bit unique. First off we have a protagonist with no name. We tend to just refer to him as Watashi as that means I in Japanese. It's about Watashi who is in college and wants to make friends, find love and and experience this rose shaped campus life he imagined. It's episodic series that always resets after each episode. He joins various clubs and each club has a new experience. Also when Watashi narrates he talks really fast. This series will test how fast you can read subtitles. It's a series that makes you think with a lot of symbolism in each episode. It's not for everyone as it is a big weird and surreal and is something that may require you to watch it multiple times to get all the symbolism and the meanings. If you're up for the challenge of watching Tatami Galaxy than enjoy the ride it moves fast.

4. Onani Master Kurosawa

A dark twisted slice-of-life manga with a slight romantic touch to it. You may find the synopsis a little sick, but believe me it turns out to be much more than that. Don't judge a book by its cover. This manga is one of my personal all-time favorites. Its the type of manga you would love to read at night, under your warm blanket and then after finishing the manga just give yourself away and let you sleep take over, with your satisfied soul accepting it with a bliss~

Synopsis: Onani means masturbation. And that's what this guy is good at. Every day after school, he sneaks into the mostly unused girls bathroom on the 3rd floor, and masturbates. Top 7 Things All Fujoshi's & Fudanshi's Know All Too Well

Heyo to all yaoi lovers reading this! We all go through the daily issues of being fujoshi's and fudanshis, so here are some things I'm sure we all know all too well!

1. People will ALWAYS try to look at your screen

We all know that horrible feeling of having someone watching us read over our shoulders, and the embarrassment felt when they see what it is. No matter how many times you try to hide your screen there will ALWAYS be someone to see it.

2. Knowing your Ships Will NEVER be Cannon

No matter how much we wish, and how much we ship, we know they will never become cannon! We ship and ship and ship. Making fanarts, writing fanfictions, and even drawing our own doujinshi. Though in the end, we all know our hopes and dreams will just be crushed.

3. Reading Smut Vs. Fluff

Ah, the mystery of how we all can keep a straight face while reading hardcore smut may never be known. Or how about how we all blush like crazy when reading fluff? I’ve always felt it should be the other way around, but that just isn’t how things work now is it? Though, I can’t say I dislike this. It does mean we can all read some smut during our classes at school!

4.Trying to Find a Good Manga You Once Read

Try as you may, and try as you might, sometimes trying just isn't enough when looking for an old manga! We all have that special manga we once read and just can't get out of our minds, but remembering it's name is a completely different story. Even after hours and hours of searching through the yaoi tag on the sites we read on, chances of finding it are low. Though, don't give up! Luck will be yours eventually.

5. Dealing with Outrageous Fandoms

We all know that one fandom that takes things too far. *cough* SnK *cough* You don't like their ship? They hate you! Now now girls, no need to fight over such trivial things. I'm sure we all have a ship or two of our own no one likes. So why fight?

In the end, we're all just fangirls and boys.

6. Not all Hot Guys Want Each Other

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but it is indeed true that not all hot guys are gay! Not every guy you see on the streets goes home to his lover for a steamy session of alone time. It's the hard truth, but in the end there is always yaoi manga/anime to rely on when you need to satisfy your needs. (Don't prey on poor innocent men with your fantasies guys!)

7. Staying up all Night to Finish a Manga

Ah, we all have had those long rewarding nights spent in front of the monitor. No matter how much sleep is lost, or how tired he may get, finishing our manga is the top priority! The amazing feeling of finally reading the happy ending at five in the morning, or even getting to the last chapter to find out there are more to come. It's all very worth it!
